Kauai Citizens and Environmental Groups Call Press Conference to Speak About Chamber of Commerce Meeting with Superferry CEO

Lihue, Kauai, HI. March 17, 2008. Citizens of Kauai, along with representatives from environmental groups, are calling a press conference to speak about Superferry CEO Tom Fargo’s expected appearance as keynote speaker at a March 19 Kauai Chamber of Commerce meeting.

The press conference, which will take place on Wednesday, March 18 at 10:00 a.m. in the rotunda of the Mayor’s office, will address Admiral Fargo’s recent statement about Superferry's possible return to Kauai.

With Monday's Supreme Court decision that Act II is unconstitutional, Fargo's appearance may be in doubt at the Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday, and Superferry's plans for the future are unknown at this time.

If they plan to replace their Maui trips with Kauai service, we will make a statement in total opposition to the return of the Superferry, and the reasons why it is still illegal to provide service without an EIS, which is what we have said from the very beginning of their venture.

As a part of Act II, the pseudo-'EIS' under that Act is also unconstitutional and totally unacceptable. Fargo's statement in support of the DOT EIS is just another example of circumvention of environmental law.

Speakers will include:

Rich Hoeppner, People for the Preservation of Kauai

Judy Dalton, Sierra Club

Gordon LaBedz, Surfrider Foundation

Blu Dux, Kauai Peace Ohana

David Dinner, Thousand Friends of Kauai

Sharon and Kip Goodwin, Kauai Alliance for Peace and Social Justice

Juan Wilson and Jonathan Jay, Island Breath.org

Dayne Aipoalani, Polyneskan Kingdom of Atooi

Pua La’a Norwood

et.al.
