Lauryn Dempsey, a spokeswoman.

No date for the transfer has been set, said Cheron Wicker, a Maritime Administration spokeswoman, in an email.

The ferries are docked at Lamberts Point in Norfolk, where they have been in financial limbo for roughly 2-1/2 years.

The Navy has been interested in the vessels since July 2009, after a bankruptcy judge ruled that the owner - Hawaii Superferry Inc. - could abandon them to lenders, who at the time were owed nearly $159 million.

The administration, which guaranteed the loans, moved them to Norfolk, where it bought the vessels at an auction on Sept. 30, 2010, on the steps of Norfolk's federal courthouse.

Built to move cars and people among the islands of Hawaii, the ferries can cruise at 35 knots. Between 320 and 340 feet long, they each can carry 836 passengers and 282 cars.

One of the ferries, the Huakai, was used in the military's relief efforts after the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010.

In June, the Maritime Administration put the two vessels up for sale on an "as is, where is" basis and eventually received four bids.

In September, the administration said it was "working expeditiously with bidders and other interested parties in evaluating its options, with a goal of maximizing the government's return from these vessels."Mauibradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759237357642699345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-57141781143928022762011-06-20T18:30:17.513-07:002011-06-20T18:30:17.513-07:00BTW, this bill failed because the Legislature real...BTW, this bill failed because the Legislature realized they would not have the money to subsidize a money losing state ferry using the same prior vessels, as was the language in the bills.Mauibradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759237357642699345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-3200637694307922372010-12-24T13:15:42.104-08:002010-12-24T13:15:42.104-08:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Mauibradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759237357642699345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-77840687381359210952010-12-24T09:21:18.939-08:002010-12-24T09:21:18.939-08:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.timonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00738216296146479123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-81028542294018498722010-11-15T11:06:39.573-08:002010-11-15T11:06:39.573-08:00Thanks for the info. Thanks for the info.Milindhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00132584312790744341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-38135793392212239352010-10-14T21:25:07.521-07:002010-10-14T21:25:07.521-07:00@leesea, I looked at Tim Colton's recent comme...@leesea, I looked at Tim Colton's recent comments, and they do not add up. Comme...A little something I just posted elsewhere:

Commenting on "Littoral combat ships: Analysts unable to compare fuel costs" at al.com on May 02, 2010

You missed the point of that CBO report. Basically what it determined is that the fuel expense of LCS-1, even at moderately higher speeds, was not high enough even for the ship's lifetime to offset the higher construction cost of LCS-2 (+$100 million more than LCS-1) to justify choosing LCS-2 over LCS-1 regardless of what LCS-2's average fuel expenses will be. That CBO report was significant in that it was the Alabama Senators who asked for it, and it showed that LCS-1's lifetime costs would likely be less than LCS-2's even considering fuel expense. For anybody who has been objectively watching this, it should be clear the competition is over. LCS-1 wins. Only poor losers used to having their way with governments would think they'd accomplish anything by appealing to the GAO. That's a waste of time. The GAO won't change what the contractor spent too much money building.Mauibradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759237357642699345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-23199428876654352772010-03-17T15:13:17.500-07:002010-03-17T15:13:17.500-07:00Comment forwarded to us by a reliable source:

Some tests are targeted toward panel fairness for stealth applications. Some yards are currently conducting a study with a NASA test lab involving corrosion testing to solidify and move material certification forward. Overall we think it is good for our industry to conduct research and improve the engineering process in general. The statement in the article that no issues exist with ... may not be entirely true, we have heard rumor that there has been some minor structural issues but nothing that compromises the overall ship. All that aside the bets within the industry say that the Navy will continue with the JHSV program as they are noncombat transport vessels and that the LCS as a true combatant will be won by the Lockheed/Marinette team with the steel hull. It would appear that the Navy is not up for taking a tinfoil boat to a gun fight."Mauibradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759237357642699345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-41782472118204989102010-03-03T07:34:11.792-08:002010-03-03T07:34:11.792-08:00Jones Act says that 75% of all ownership in all re...Jones Act says that 75% of all ownership in all related entities must be U.S. This rumor does not meet the sniff test.timonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00738216296146479123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-26593880163766418332010-02-19T09:45:19.755-08:002010-02-19T09:45:19.755-08:00see also:

They want to try to bring the JHSV ('Superferry on steroids') military version back to Hawaii. But, so far I have only seen mention of Pearl Harbor. They might want to use JHSV's between Pearl Harbor and Kawaihae Harbor on the Big Island between two military bases that might use these vessels for training. There are plenty of unmitigated arguments against that too. Maui and Kauai, on the other hand serve no effective military purpose for the JHSV's use. PMRF doesn't need armored training and the roads are not re-inforced out of Nawiliwili Harbor, so I don't think JHSV's should reasonably be used in/out of Maui nor Kauai. Rest assured.

MauibradMauibradhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16759237357642699345noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730375540078695956.post-1211527685225122532010-02-05T20:35:25.132-08:002010-02-05T20:35:25.132-08:00Dear Sirs,
